Rack power density (kW per rack)
Rack power density states the electrical load a single rack draws, in kilowatts. It is the figure that decides whether air cooling remains viable.
Air cooling is generally held to its limit around 20 kW per rack. Current AI racks run well beyond that, and vendors are designing toward 1 MW racks.
Density, not floor area, now sets the constraint on how much compute a given building can hold.
The domestic average is about 4.8 kW per rack, with AI data centres in Korea approaching 15 kW. Average intake capacity per facility is 13.2 MW (2023).
The gap between 4.8 kW and current AI rack densities is why the Korean discussion is mostly about retrofitting existing buildings rather than filling new ones.
