White space (Korean: sangmyeon)
White space is the area of a data centre where racks, cabinets and IT equipment sit — the productive, leasable area.
Gray space is the supporting area holding power and cooling plant. Its size is driven by the size and density of the white space it serves.
«Floor space» is not the equivalent term. White space and gray space are a pair, and a quotation that gives only total floor area does not say how much of it is leasable.
«sangmyeon» is the term used in Korean contracts, proposals and price lists for the leased area. It predates the wider adoption of liquid cooling here and remains in general use.
Because rack power density is rising faster than area, a Korean quotation stated only in sangmyeon will understate what is actually being bought. Power per rack should be read alongside it.
